DESCRIPTION: Bank of Australia trial/artist design specimens for 5 Shillings, Sydney 182- and 20 Pounds Sydney 18--, on watermarked paper, the former with writing on back: -size of 5/- plate The ten shilling to be- and the latter with writing on front -Specimen of Note- (on half sheet of folded paper with adhesion marks and tear). Also Bank of NSW trial specimen for 5 Pounds Sydney N/D (c 1826). Potts was born in Derbyshire in 1793, and a convict that became a prominent businessman; the first employee of the Bank of New South Wales, banknote designer, developer and builder of Clarens House at Potts Point, after whom the area is named (the navy base HMAS Kuttabul now stands on the site). Unique, and a fascinating piece of early Colonial history. (3 notes total).
